creed

creed
Summaries of Christian belief which are found in the NT at 1 Cor. 15:13 ff. and 1 Tim. 3:16, and perhaps also Phil. 2:6–11; but creeds such as the so-called Apostles' Creed used at Rome did not come into existence until the 3rd cent. They were found necessary in order to exclude heretical views about Christ, and they were convenient expressions of belief to be learnt by candidates for baptism.
